A blood lipid panel, also known as a lipid profile, is a laboratory assessment that measures total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides. The imbalanced accumulation of these compounds in the arterial walls gradually leads to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. By narrowing the vascular lumen and reducing arterial elasticity, these plaques restrict blood flow and create the conditions for critical events such as heart attacks and strokes. Regular monitoring of these markers is a key tool for the early detection of hidden vascular risks before clinical symptoms appear

Preparation Conditions Prior to a Lipid Profile Test

Fasting: Standard fasting of 9 to 12 hours prior to blood collection is essential to measure triglycerides and other lipids with the highest accuracy

Diet: Consuming fatty, heavy meals or alcoholic beverages the night before the test can falsely elevate triglyceride levels

Medications: Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, diuretics, and statins, affect lipid levels; therefore, the use of any medication should be coordinated with a physician or laboratory personnel prior to the test

Physical Activity: Strenuous workouts and heavy exercise should be avoided in the 24 hours leading up to the test

 Symptoms and Warning Signs of Elevated Blood Lipids

Hyperlipidemia, or high blood cholesterol and triglycerides, typically shows no obvious signs in its early stages, which is why it is known as a silent risk. However, in advanced cases or severe lipid deposition in specific tissues, limited clinical signs may appear

Xanthomas and Xanthelasmas: The development of yellowish bumps or cholesterol plaques around the eyelids and the tendons of the hands and feet, caused by the localized accumulation of cholesterol

Corneal Arcus: The appearance of a white or grayish-white ring around the margin of the cornea, which in individuals below older age groups can indicate a lipid metabolism disorder

Muscle Pain and Chronic Fatigue: A feeling of heaviness, vague pain, or cramping in the leg muscles, particularly during movement, which may stem from impaired peripheral circulation

Sudden Cardiovascular Complications: Chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath during exertion, indicating advanced narrowing in the coronary arteries of the heart
